This week at Gray's Farm - W/B 5th November
Week beginning: 5th November
Nursery
This week in nursery our theme will be Festival of light, we will be looking at Guy Fawkes and Diwali. The children will be explore and experimenting with light and colour .
In maths we will be looking at shapes and patterns and our book of the week will be an audio book called Sparks in the sky.
Reception
We hope you had a good rest and welcome you back this term. In Reception class this week we will be celebrating Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights. The children will be learning about the traditions of the festival: how families decorate their homes with beautiful lights and colourful rangoli patterns during Diwali, that people also light oil lamps called diyas to chase away darkness and bring happiness and how families come together to share delicious sweets, play games, and enjoy fireworks on this day.
In maths we shall be looking at repeating patterns and shape within patterns by exploring what a rangoli pattern is and what 2D shapes can be used to create them.
Year 1
In Year 1 in English we will be focusing on our whole school text The Secret Elephant, we will be designing a new home for the elephant and using our adjectives and nouns to write about it. In Maths we will be focusing on place value.
PE days are Wednesday and Friday. Please make sure your child's reading record is signed after you have read with them every evening.
Year 2
This week in maths we will be looking at place value and how to partition numbers. In English we will be starting our whole school text 'The Secret Elephant' which is very exciting! Please ensure your child's reading record is signed every day.
Year 3
This week in Year 3, we are learning how and when to use paragraphs and looking at the choices of sentence openers to link them. In maths, we are returning to place value and its importance in all areas of calculation. We are looking forward to starting our history topic, 'The Ancient Egyptians' and will be investigating how light helps us to see in science.
Year 4
Hopefully you have all had a lovely half term break and have returned refreshed for our new topics in History, RE, Art and even more science! Swimming is continuing (volunteers still welcome!) and we look forward to our trip to see the owls!
Year 5
We are looking forward to starting a new term in Year 5. We are starting off with Place Value, focusing on decimals and rounding numbers. In English, we are doing a whole-school book called 'The Secret Elephant' based on the true story of a baby elephant and a zoo-keeper at Belfast Zoo during the war.
In our curriculum subjects, we are now looking at forces in Science. We are also starting new subjects: History (The Mayans), RE (Sikhism) and Art (drawing). It should be a lot of fun!
Year 6
This half term, we will be studying the different crimes committed and the punishments issued throughout the different periods of British history. In maths, we will be fine tuning our presentation and layout when it comes to written methods, with a particular focus on long multiplication. During our English lessons, we will be consolidating our knowledge of spelling rules and patterns.
